GRAMMAR EXERCISES: PRESENT PERFECT OR SIMPLE PAST, PASSIVE, etc.

1) Present Perfect or Simple Past? Fill in the correct form of the verb.

2)Personal Passive Rewrite the sentences below using the personal passive. Only use “by” when it is necessary.

4-One of the teachers invited us to visit her farm.

3) Passive with Modals

Put the following sentences into the passive form.

1-You can cook potatoes in four minutes in the microwave.
2-You must boil eggs at least five minutes.
3-You should always wash salad in water with salt in it.
4-You must cook fresh fish the day you buy it.
5-You can keep vegetables in the fridge or in a cool, dark cupboard.
6-You shouldn’t keep oranges in a warm place.
7-You should drink white wine with fish.
8-You needn’t buy the most expensive tea.
9-You have to boil rice at least 15 minutes.
10-You shouldn’t eat meat more than three times a week.
4) Used to Put one verb into the correct form of used to and the other into the past simple.

5) Emphatic “Do” Complete the sentences below using the correct form of the emphatic do.

‘LASSEN’: LET OR MAKE?

Fill in the correct verb form. Guideline: ‘make’ has to do with force. If you make someone do something you force them to do it. So to make someone do something is normally connected with unpleasant things, things you don’t want to do. Example: He made me clean my room.
‘Let’, on the other hand, has to do with permission. If you let someone do something, you allow them to do it. So to let someone do something is usually connected with pleasant things, things you’d like to do. Example: He let me stay up to watch the movie. The youth hostel I stayed in was okay. There were some things I liked about it but there were also things I didn’t like.
