TELLING THE TIME: A GAME AND A RAP
The commonest way to tell someone the time is to give the minutes first, followed by the preposition to (vor) and past (nach), and then the hour. O’ clock is only used at the hour.
Examples: It’s ten to three. It’s quarter past three. It’s seven o’clock.
GAME
Begin with the teacher and go around the room. The teacher says to the first pupil: ‘Hello __________! Have you got the time?’ The first pupil answers: ‘It’s nine o’clock.’ Then the same pupil turns to the second pupil and says: Hello __________! Have you got the time?’ The second pupil answers by adding five minutes to the first answer. ‘It’s five past nine.’ Continue, going around the room. OPTIONAL: Go around the room again, this time adding only one minute at a time. Remember to use the word ‘minutes’ except with round numbers. Example: It’s six minutes past one.
RAP
‘Hey, Tim! Have you got the time?’
‘It’s quarter past nine.’
‘What’s the time, Sven?’
‘It’s ten past ten.’
‘What time is it, Kevin?’
‘Five past eleven.’
‘See you at seven.’
‘What time is it, Sue?’
‘It’s eight minutes to two.’
‘Have you got the time for me, Lee?’
‘It’s half past three.’
‘Hey, Kate!
It’s getting late.
Have you got the time?’

four o’clock – STOP!
Five, six, seven o’clock,
eight o’clock – STOP!
Nine, ten, eleven o’clock,

Englisch Online Lernen: Passiv-Sätze
PUNKED! WORKING WITH THE PASSIVE
Underline sentences or parts of sentences which are suitable for the passive form and make the necessary changes.
Example: The next thing I knew, I was…
What a horrible experience! I was walking down the street, looking for a good sports store when suddenly, a car stopped just beside me. The next thing I knew, someone pulled me inside. Whoever it was put a blindfold over my eyes. The car speeded away. After what seemed like an hour, the car stopped and someone opened the door and pulled me out. They grabbed my arm and dragged me up a hill. When we reached the top, they led me up some stairs. Someone opened a creaky door and pulled me inside. They led me to a chair and pushed me down. Then rough hands removed my blindfold. A bright light was shining straight into my eyes. I couldn’t see anything but I heard men laughing. Someone gave me a cup of coffee and told me to drink it. After that, someone tied my hands behind my back. All of a sudden, everyone left the room and it became very quiet.
I must have sat there for several hours before they returned. They put the blindfold over my eyes again. Then they took me back down the hill to a car. Someone warned me not to tell anyone about what had happened. There were three or four men in the car. For the next hour or so, they drove through busy streets. When they stopped, they pushed me out of the car and left me alone. I felt very frightened. Suddenly, someone untied my hands and removed the blindfold from my eyes. Confused, I looked around. There, standing right behind me was no other than Ashton Kutcher! Before he said anything, I knew what he’d say: Punked!

HE, SHE, IT- DAS “S“ MUSS MIT!
Change the ‘he-she-it- verbs’ in the text from the past to the present tense. Don’t forget the ‘s’!
Simon wrote a story for his teacher. It was about a girl named Shannon. She was twelve years old. Her father bought her a dog. He built a large dog house. Shannon named her dog Buster. He ate very little so Shannon took him to the vet. The vet told her to feed Buster only the best food and to take him for long walks every day. Shannon did what the doctor said. She chose the best dog food she could find. She kept a logbook and wrote down how much Buster ate every day. And she took Buster for long walks every day, too. She went to the city park with him every day. There were lots of people with dogs in the park. She met a nice boy out with his dog there. They talked about their dogs and other things. He told her that he had two cats and a budgie. They sat down on a park bench and watched their dogs play. After a while, Buster got tired. Shannon got up quickly and said goodbye to the boy. Then she went home.

Englisch Online Lernen: Participles
GUIDELINES FOR USING PARTICIPLES
Participles are elegant, participles are ‘very English’. The hearts of English teachers jump for joy when their students use participles correctly. The bad news is, using participles correctly is difficult for EFL learners. The good news is, you can learn how to by following the following guidelines:
1) When do you use a participle? When you want to connect up two or more actions. Example: Meg hurried to meet her father. She ran all the way.
2) Where do you use a participle? You must decide which of the two actions is less important. The verb describing the less important action is turned into a participle. Example: Meg hurried to meet her father. She hurried all the way.
3) Which participle (present, past, perfect) do you use? Take a close look at the main action and the subordinate action. There are four possible constellations. For each constellation there is the appropriate participle.
1-The two actions take place at the same time. The subordinate action (verb) is active. Example: Meg hurried to meet her father. She ran all the way. = present participle: Running all the way, Meg hurried to meet her father.
2-The two actions take place at the same time. The subordinate action (verb) is passive. Example: Meg was shocked at the news, so she started crying. = past participle: Shocked at the news, Meg started crying.
3-The subordinate action takes place before the main action, the subordinate verb is active Example: After Meg had taken a shower, she changed into some fresh clothes. = perfect (active) participle: Having taken a shower, Meg changed into some fresh clothes.
4-The subordinate action takes place before the main action, the subordinate verb is passive Example: Our mailman asked for a change of route after he had been bitten by our dog. = perfect passive: Having been bitten by our dog, our mailman asked for a change of route
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN! Use appropriate participles.
1- When Sam heard the bell, he went to the classroom at once. ________________________________________________________________________
2- Sally was hurt by the mean remark, so she called her mother. ________________________________________________________________________
3-After Mr. White had parked his car, he hurried up the stairs to his office. ________________________________________________________________________
4- Lee almost started crying when he was selected to play on the all-star team. ________________________________________________________________________
