CARELESS AND THE ELEPHANT POACHERS

It happened right in front of Careless’s eyes. He was filming one of the most spectacular elephant herds he had ever seen when suddenly, a shot rang out and the largest bull elephant collapsed. Careless realized at once that poachers were at work. The rest of the herd began to panic. Careless had to do something to save them. He ran out into the clearing between the elephants and the poachers and help
up his hand. ‘Don’t shoot!’ he cried. ‘If you do, I have enough evidence to put you in jail for a long time. I filmed the whole scene!’ One of the poachers, obviously the leader, held up his arm. ‘Hold your fire for a
moment, men. We’ll take care of Mr. Elephant Lover first, then we can go back to what we were doing before he got in the way.’ He aimed his gun at Careless and ordered one of his men to take his camcorder away from him. After that, he gave some of the others some rope. ‘Tie our friend to a tree where he can watch everything. When we’re finished, it will be his turn.’

CARELESS AND THE UNINVITED GUESTS

It happened during the feast. The Opalanies, a pygmy tribe and old friends of Careless Corrigan’s, were giving a feast in his honor. Suddenly, the music fell silent. A band of white men had stepped out of the darkness of the jungle into the clearing, carrying guns. ‘Well, look at that, boys!’ boomed the voice of the red-headed leader of the band. ‘They’ve prepared a feast for us!’ All eyes turned to the pygmy chief. He stood up slowly. ‘This feast is in honor of the man you see sitting beside me, Careless Corrigan, but if you’ve come as friends you are welcome to join us. There’s enough food for everyone.’ ‘Did you hear that, boys? My, my, ain’t the chief polite? Now you listen to me, half pint. I give the orders here!’ A twisted, evil grin spread across Red Head’s face. ‘My boys and I are hungry and we’ll take what we want.’
Careless jumped to his feet. ‘Hold on, there! You can’t talk to the chief of the Opalanies that way. I demand that you apologize to him at once!’ Red Head’s grin grew broader. He stared at Careless. Suddenly, he turned to his men. ‘Round up these savages. Leave Mr. Corrigan to me!’ Within minutes, the whole pygmy tribe, men, women and children had been herded together in the middle of the clearing.
Red Head stuck his gun in Careless’s ribs. ‘Now, Mr. Bigmouth, you’re going to talk your friend, the chief, into telling us where the gold is. We know that the Opalanies have lots of gold and we’ve come to get it. But you’d better talk fast. We wouldn’t want to kill any of your little friends, would we boys?’ He looked at his men and let out a wild laugh.

CARELESS AND THE PIRANHAS

‘It’s sooo hot, Careless. Can we cool off a little in the river?’ said Linda sweetly. Careless was hurrying to reach camp but it was a hot day and a quick swim in the river would be refreshing, he knew. ‘Good idea,’ he said, pulling in beside the road and parking the jeep. ‘Last one in has to wash the dishes!’ Linda was already pulling off her boots. Hurrying to be first, Careless forgot to test the waters for piranhas. (The first thing
he normally did was to throw a piece of meat into the water to make sure those deadly fish weren’t around.) He should have done it this time, too. They had just entered the water when Careless, who was paying more attention to Linda than to where he was going, struck a sharp rock with his foot and cut it badly. No sooner had the blood started flowing than he saw the water begin to boil. Oh, oh. He realized at once what it meant. ‘PIRANHAS!’ he screamed to Linda. ‘SWIM FOR YOUR LIFE!’

CARELESS IN THE CAVE

Careless had spent the afternoon on Blueberry Mountain, looking for blueberries. As he came down the mountain, his bucket full of blueberries, our hero was feeling very pleased with himself. He had just reached the bottom when he saw what looked like a hole in the side of the mountain. Taking a closer look, he saw that it was the opening to a cave. Curious, he put down his bucket of blueberries and went inside. He was amazed at how large it was. Fascinated, he spent the next hour exploring, going deeper and deeper into the dark cave. When he finally turned and headed back toward the opening, he began to hear strange growling noises. He moved ahead slowly. As he got came around the last bend his eyes almost popped out of his head. There, standing in the opening, eating his blueberries were two huge bears!
Breathlessly, he waited, hoping they would soon go away. They didn’t. A moment later, they entered the cave and started moving straight towards him!

CARELESS AND THE WITCH DOCTOR’S DAUGHTER

‘Which daughter is the witch doctor’s daughter?’ Careless asked himself as he staggered towards the circle of giggling girls. ‘She’s tall and pretty,’ they had said. They had warned him to be sure to choose the right one to dance the Fire Dance with.
Careless had excellent vision, but the Sopi, the native drink, was so strong that he could hardly see straight after only one cup of it. ‘Tall and pretty, tall…pretty…pretty… tall.’ He was trying to concentrate, but right now they all looked pretty. ‘It’s no good,’ he whispered desperately, ‘I’ll just have to hope I make the right choice.’ All eyes were on him as he stretched out his hand to one of the girls. ‘Hello, my dear, are you the width dotter’s dobber.’ The Sopi had his tongue and Careless couldn’t help himself. He began to laugh. The music stopped playing, the girls stopped dancing, and everyone stared at him now. Careless tried again. ‘Are you the width dobber’s dottah?’
‘No, I’m not,’ said the girl, ‘but I’ll be happy to dance with you.’ And before Careless could say no she took him in her arms, the music started playing and Careless was dancing. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the witch doctor glaring at him. ‘Oh, oh,’ said Careless. Late that night as our hero lay in his tent trying to sleep he suddenly heard a ripping sound behind him. His heart started pounding like a drum as he turned his head to see what it was. There, standing over him, was the witch doctor with a machete in his hand and a crazy grin on his face. Now think up a good idea to rescue Careless from this terrible predicament.
