Sad to say, this story has a factual background. Because shark fin soup is considered a delicacy, sharks are being relentlessly hunted. They are caught, their fins stripped off, and their finless bodies are thrown back into the water to die.

Careless and the Shark Poachers

It had been a beautiful day of fishing on the bay. Careless smiled at Linda Lou as he started the boat’s motor to return to the docks. Suddenly, Linda Lou gave a little cry and handed Careless her binoculars. She pointed at something behind him and he turned and looked. What he saw took his breath away. It was a huge speedboat. Five or six men were on the deck, some of them with gaffs in their hands. As he watched, they pulled in several large fish. ‘I’ve got to get a closer look at this,’ he said to Linda Lou, turning in the direction of the speedboat. A few minutes later, he looked through the binoculars again. This time he was sure. ‘Do you know what those bastards are doing? They’re poaching sharks! Call the Coast Guard!’ Linda whipped out her cell phone and had just begun punching out the number when Careless heard the roar of a powerful motor. The speedboat had turned in their direction and was coming towards them. Careless opened up his little motor to full speed ahead, but soon noticed that the speedboat was gaining on them by the minute. Suddenly, he heard the sound of gunshots. ‘Careless!’ cried Linda Lou. ‘They’re shooting at us!’

Careless had come to Rumania for the first time. He had read about the Rumanian White Deer. It was high on the list of endangered species and he wanted to get pictures of it before it was too late. For days, his Rumanian guide had led him through one of the thickest forests he’d ever seen. He saw all kinds of wild animals but not one Rumanian White Deer. On the evening of the final day of the expedition, he was just returning to camp when he heard a horrible noise. it sounded like a large animal in great pain. He signalled to his guide to follow him as he moved slowly and quietly in the direction of the terrible sounds. A moment later, looking out from behind a bush, he saw what was making the noise. Some men had captured a bear in a trap and – using a pair of pliers – were about to pull out its claws. Careless was beside himself with anger. Without thinking of his own safety, he ran at them.

‘What do you want?’ the man with the pliers shouted.

‘You’re hurting the bear. What in God’s name are you doing?’ Careless said.

‘Just a little operation,’ said a second man. ‘To make him into a dancing bear.’

‘Stop this at once!’ Careless cried.

‘What are you going to do about it?’ said one of the others.

‘I’ll report you.’

‘Grab him!’ said the man with the pliers.

‘Dragomir!’ Careless turned to look for his guide but his guide had gone.

‘Take off his shoes!’ the man with the pliers said. ‘Let’s remove some of his ‘claws’. The others laughed wildly as they pulled off Careless’s shoes.

‘Now for some fun!’ said the man with the pliers.

INTRODUCING … CARELESS CORRIGAN!

Careless Corrigan is an adventurer, a courageous, bold man with only one weakness. He’s, well, careless. He just doesn’t think carefully enough about what might happen to him when he’s off on his adventures, whether he’s climbing a mountain, crossing a river or exploring unknown territory.
He’s continually getting himself – and sometimes his girlfriend Linda Lou with him – in difficult and dangerous situations.
It’s up to your students to use their imagination and find ways to rescue him. To help ensure that the students come up with original ideas (rather than clichés) there are certain rules for rescuing our hero.

1. Careless must survive. Whatever the situation, he must come out of it alive. (Linda Lou must survive, too.)
2. There must be no super-human creatures (Superman, Batman, etc.) to help him.
3. Careless doesn’t carry a mobile phone with him.
4. Careless is not armed, he’s got no weapons – except for his Swiss knife.
5. What happens to him is not a dream, it’s real!

In my experience (and it’s always been good), this task can best be done in pair work. Point out to the pupils that they should take their time to develop their ideas before putting them to paper. Encourage them to be creative and imaginative. It can be useful to give them a framework (minimum-maximum number of words) to guide their work.

CARELESS AND THE ILLEGAL CAMPFIRE

Careless, Linda Lou at his side, was just rounding a bend in the Blackberry River when he first saw the smoke. He signalled to Linda Lou to be quiet and follow him. They kept low behind the bushes lining the river, moving slowly. When he got close to where the smoke was coming from, he looked out from behind the bushes. What he saw was two men and a woman, sitting around a fire. They appeared to be cooking something. Careless watched them a while, then stepped out onto the riverbank and approached them, Linda Lou right behind him. The two men saw Careless coming and gave him a cold stare. ‘What do you want?’ said the bigger of the two men. Careless tried for his best smile but it failed to impress them. ‘We were hiking along the river when we noticed your smoke,’ he said, still smiling. ‘Did you know that it’s not allowed to make fires in this part of the forest?’ The bigger man let out a wild whoop of laughter. ‘Of course we know,’ he said, ‘but we have our own rules.’ He gave Careless a what’re-you-going-to-do-about-it grin. Careless smiled as if the man’s answer amused him. Slowly, he went over to the fire. ‘That’s very interesting,’ he said, ‘but I’m afraid your rules don’t apply here in the park.’ Laughing softly, Careless began to kick sand into the fire. The two men sat watching for a moment, mouths wide open. Suddenly, before Careless could stop them, the bigger man jumped up and grabbed Linda Lou. ‘I’m going to count to ten,’ he said to Careless. ‘If you haven’t disappeared around the bend by then, I’ll break her arm.’ He twisted Linda Lou’s arm until she cried out in pain. Careless hesitated. ‘Go, Careless, go!’ she cried.

CARELESS AND THE PYGMIES

When Careless finally reached camp, he was so tired that he slipped into his sleeping bag without taking off his clothes. He fell asleep almost immediately. If he had stayed awake a few minutes he would have heard the footsteps outside his tent. He awoke when someone threw water into his face. Before he realized what was happening, he was pulled out of his sleeping bag and dragged out of his tent. There, in the moonlight, he found himself face to face with a group of angry-looking pygmies. One of them, obviously the leader, was shouting at him. Careless couldn’t understand what he was saying but knew that this was not a friendly greeting. Sure enough, when the little man finished his speech, Careless was tied to a tree. The pygmies stared at him a while, then turned away and went back into the forest. They left two of their men behind, to guard Careless. Before they left they said something to the two men. It’s a good thing Careless didn’t understand their language. Then he would have known that the group would return the next morning to play a little game with him. The name of the game was ‘Hunt the White ManDown’. The rules were simple: Careless would be given ten minutes to run from them before they came after him with their bows and arrows!

CARELESS AND THE WASP

Careless was determined to reach camp by sunset. He and Linda Lou had been hiking for hours and both of them were tired and hungry. Neither of them had seen the wasp when they got in the jeep. They had only gone a few miles when suddenly Careless felt a sharp pain and cried out. Linda Lou turned and saw the wasp on the back of her boyfriend’s neck. Immediately, Careless’s neck began swelling. A moment later, his face started swelling and he was having difficulty breathing. ‘Take the wheel,’ he said just before he passed out. Linda grabbed the wheel. The problem was, he was slumped over it and the jeep was traveling fast down the mountainside.

CARELESS AND BLUE BEAR RIVER

Careless had got it into his head to explore Blue Bear River and nothing was going to stop him. It had been raining steadily for almost a week, but Careless couldn’t wait. It was still raining the day he began his trip. As he paddled out onto the river, he felt the powerful current pull at his canoe. Not to worry. He would let the current work for him, carrying him quickly downstream. Linda Lou would be waiting for him in the jeep at Lion’s Bridge that evening. The first hour of the trip was uneventful but as the rain grew heavier, the water rose and the current grew stronger than ever. Soon Careless felt like a rodeo rider on the back of a bucking bronco as the canoe twisted and turned in the current. Reaching the rapids, he let out a little cry. Normally, they were a fun part of the river for him. But now they took his breath away. All he could see was wild, white water, roaring like some kind of angry animal. He put down his paddle and gripped the sides of the canoe as tightly as he could. His last thought before entering the rapids was, why didn’t I think to bring my life jacket with me?

CARELESS AND THE MARIJUANA PLANTATION

Careless and his long-time girlfriend Linda Lou were on the last day of their trip to Yosemite National Park. They had just reached the bottom of Daredevil Mountain when suddenly Careless stopped and sniffed the air. He recognized that sweet smell at once. Looking around, he soon saw where it was coming from. In the valley just below them, half-hidden by giant Sequoias was a huge field of marijuana plants! He motioned to Linda Lou that they had to get out of there as quickly and quietly as possible. But they had just taken a few steps when he heard cries behind them. He turned and looked. What he saw made his blood freeze. Several men were running through the field towards them, shouting and carrying guns.

CARELESS AND THE POLAR BEAR

Just as Careless finally got close enough to the polar bear to take photos, it suddenly turned and looked straight at him. Careless put down his camera and stood very, very still, getting ready to run if the bear came at him. A few long minutes later, when the bear finally turned away again, Careless started taking pictures of it. Click! Click! Click! On the third click the bear suddenly stopped what it was doing and came running at Careless. Dropping his camera, Careless turned to run but soon noticed that the ice he was standing on was surrounded on all sides by water, the icy waters of the Arctic Sea! It had broken away from the land! Go with the floe, he said to himself with a grim laugh, as he turned to face the huge bear.
